2025 is not too far off and we probably have a list of contenders who are going to battle it out for the oldest and generally regarded as the most prestigious individual award for football players. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated the past decade of football and surely there are many players who play amazingly well and we will see players of Ronaldo and Messi’s quality too but it won’t be wrong to say that it is unlikely that we will see someone with such determination, consistency and commitment that makes these two what they are today.
So what to expect? Listed below is the list of the ballon d’or 2025 prospects who can win the ultimate title of the best player in the world.
Erling Haaland – 20
It seems inevitable that the Norwegian striker will one day win the Ballon d’Or. Erling Haaland moved from RB Salzburg to Dortmund in January 2019 and became the first-ever teenager to score 40 or more goals in a single season, something not even Messi or Ronaldo have managed to do. Based on the promise he is showing right now, he will likely win the Ballon d’Or in his career. Together with PSG’s Mbappé, Erling Braut Haaland is regarded as one of the best young football players in the world.
Jadon Sancho – 20
The young right-winger has excelled in Germany ever since his transfer from Manchester City to Dortmund. Though the English international was linked with a move to Man United over the summer, the 20-year-old decided to sign a new contract with BVB. Sancho is, however, expected to take on a new challenge in the near future, likely returning to the Premier League. Jadon Sancho AKA the Mighty Mouse is one of the most coveted young players in football and a potential future Ballon d’Or winner.
Kylian Mbappe – 22
In 2018, Mbappe placed fourth in the Ballon d’Or rankings and then sixth in 2019; but he will be striving to win the award in the coming years. The 22-year-old is still yet to win the Champions League. Real Madrid is the obvious destination that we could be expecting him to sign for next, and being able to prove his worth in multiple countries will be something he would look to do in order to replicate his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo. Mbappe is already one of the best players in the world, and at only 22 he can only improve further. Whether he stays in Paris or not, he will clearly be a world-class player for years to come and we should expect many more awards and trophies to come his way.
Matthijs de Ligt – 21
Fabio Cannavaro was the last defender to win the Ballon d’Or, in 2006, after helping Italy in the World Cup. The award has been dominated by forwards..Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt was named as the winner of the 2019 Kopa Trophy at the 2019 Ballon d’Or ceremony. The Kopa Trophy is an award organized by France Football presented to the best performing player under the age of 21. De Ligt is only the second football player to win the new trophy, inheriting it from France and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe the previous year. The Dutch international is one of the best young defenders in Europe and definitely a contender to win the Ballon d’Or one day.
Bruno Fernandes – 26
He’s already won four Premier League Player of the Month in the previous calendar year making him the first ever player to do so. Bruno Fernandes has a bright future ahead of him and a lot of trophies in his cabinet. His style of play and the impact he creates for the team with the leadership qualities he has, he is surely going to be one of the greatest midfielders of all time and a top contender for the ballon d’or for the years to come.
By the time comes, most of them would be at their prime and would be ready to take the throne as the best player in the world from the greatest of all times – Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
